Chapter 25

With Teresa dispatched to arrange a meeting with Copperlin, my attention began to shift towards the construction of the railroad itself. The train’s progress was coming along nicely. The dwarven clans had finished their smelting work and now the engineers were in the process of finishing the first train cab. Things were coming along smoothly, and we had predictions that this vessel would be pulling full steam—well, not exactly steam,—ahead by the end of spring.

With confirmation that the train was underway, the railroads needed to be finalized. I had used the Great Picture’s planning tool to prepare ahead of time, laying down a total of 1,000 miles of track. All I had to do was give the work order and the steel would be purchased, the workers would be hired, and the tracks would be placed.

For now, the first railroad, known as the Shield Railway, would run alongside the Amber Road, reaching all the way down to Brightwinds. From Brightwinds, the railway made a circuit, moving further west, to the outskirts of the beach, then moving north, passing alongside Etherdome, Tine and then wrapped around Moria, Chase’s new city. The circuit would move back down into the Amber woods and connect in front of my capital.

The shield railway would ensure everyone in the Commonwealth, except for Harold, was within range of the Prephius train. The security force within the Amber woods would be able to rapidly respond to any threat within mere hours. Extending the rail out to Harold would require a significantly larger investment of money and steel, and frankly, the man didn’t much need the additional protection. Eventually, we’d get a rail further out to the west, but doing so right now wasn’t high priority.

One complication with our little setup was that no one knew how to develop rail switches. We had a rotating platform that could be used to spin the main train to the north or to the south, but actual functioning rail switches? Far beyond me and everyone else in my company. A few of the dwarves had some prototype ideas, but for now, we’d have to manually change the direction of the train at each station. For one cab, that wasn’t a big deal, but once we had trains with multiple cars attached…well, we’d need to figure out switches. It wouldn’t be too much to ask for one of the gods to have selected a railroad engineer as their Champion, would it?

The cost of this project was 2 million aurum. A high sum. I went to click on the Build option, but an error message popped up in front of me. Workers will not accept payment.

I frowned. “What in the hell…” I murmured, clicking again and again, only to receive the exact same error message. That wasn’t good. I tried to purchase something else, a small storage shack in my territory. Same error. Tine’s production was slowly dropping, and I could see the amount of unemployed was also increasing. Happiness dropped significantly, dipping into the negatives, for the first time in a long, long time.
